When I look at this cakesmash photoshoot, I can’t believe that they were taken nearly a year ago!  I had the pleasure of becoming great friends with Amy, Emma’s mum, when working in the travel industry a few years back.  In fact, I was the first person (besides Amy’s husband, Mike) to even know she was pregnant!  And oh the adventures we’ve had since.  At 7 months pregnant, Amy and I even took a fun 48hr girls weekend to New York City, where the mum-to-be ran me off my feet, sightseeing.  Since her debut, Emma’s been my cute, little buddy.

It was a no-brainer that when it came time to celebrate Emma’s first birthday, we would do a cakesmash photoshoot.  Being my first-ever cakesmash photoshoot, I was excited to capture the sugary mess in all it’s glory.  My boyfriend and I had been invited to celebrate at her birthday party.  It only made sense that I would do the cakesmash photoshoot then and there.   Unlike other child photography, a cakesmash is all about catching the excitement of making a mess!  These are photos where the messier the kid can be, the better the photos turn out!

Amy and Mike, being the awesome parents they are, decided on a superhero theme for Emma’s first birthday party.  It was a great hit with both the kids and adults alike!  Amy even went so far as to make Emma a Wonder Woman onesie and cape!

Once the party started to wind down, we got down to business.  I set up Emma’s little Muskoka chair and a picnic blanket in front of the wooden fence in their back yard.  Amy had also made a gorgeous bunting banner out of comic books, which we utilized in the background during the cakesmash photoshoot.  At first Emma was a bit unsure about the cupcakes that we’d brought over for her to smash up.  However, before long she was squishing the icing between her fingers and toes!  Leave it to a 1-year old to figure out the point of a cakesmash photoshoot on her own!
