I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again, there is something so special about first-time parents-to-be doing a maternity photo session. It’s a brief moment in time where the couple can enjoy the last bit of it being “just the two of them.” There is also a combination of excitement and nerves, as they realize how their lives will change completely.
My friend, Amanda, mentioned that her sister, Katie, was expecting, and she expressed interest in gifting her sister a maternity photo session! Amanda put me in touch with Katie, and we had an enjoyable phone consultation to create a plan of action. This step, I find, is hugely important as I am able to impart some styling suggestions and manage expectations. After a bit of schedule coordination, we agreed to meet at Katie’s parents’ home in Burlington, Ontario, in late November.
The Story behind Katie & Kevin’s Burlington Maternity Photo Session
When I arrived, Katie and Kevin were dressed impeccably and Katie’s baby bump was looking all sorts of adorable. We took some inside shots to get them used to the camera and comfortable working with me. With most of my shoots, this maternity photo session included, I make sure to bring a portable speaker. I find that putting on music can help ease any nerves for those not comfortable in front of the lens.
Once Katie and Kevin warmed up and became used to the camera, we ventured outside and took some gorgeous photos outside Katie’s childhood home. I loved that during this maternity photo session we were able to incorporate a place that meant so much to the couple.
Katie braved the cold a little longer and we managed to get some beautiful mama-to-be portraits that look incredibly stunning. Seriously, she was glowing! And I know it wasn’t just because we were both freezing our butts off in the sub-zero temperatures.
We took a short break to warm back up and do a wardrobe change. Then headed to the backyard to continue with the maternity photo session with both mom and dad-to-be. Despite the freezing cold temperatures, these two were up for anything and really played along! I photographed them throwing the fallen leaves in the air, adorable cuddles, and just some genuinely beautiful moments.
As of writing this post, Katie and Kevin have welcomed their daughter into the world! Congratulations to the happy family! I look forward to continuing to capture memories for this beautiful growing family.
